When to Trust Experts, and When to Trust Yourself

Trust can be used as a noun, verb or adjective. Regardless of how it appears in a sentence or a thought process, it boils down to the same thing: the credibility of the person guiding your decision. Sometimes expert trust is vital, like in healthcare; other times, personal choice and experience is paramount, like when raising a child. Then there are times when a balanced approach is required.

So, when do you put your trust in an expert, and when do you decide on your own? Let’s take a closer look.

When Expert Guidance Is Invaluable

The times you really should take expert advice are in any ‘your money or your life (YMYL)’ situation. This is Google’s term for high-stakes topics where accuracy directly impacts health, safety or finances.

Despite advances in AI technology, AI models still can’t replace the experience of an NHS doctor. Medical professionals study for a minimum of eight years for a reason, so they’re legitimately qualified to treat patients. We all know someone who has tried to self-diagnose via Dr Google, only to end up in the emergency ward. The same applies to people who watch medical dramas on TV and then believe they can perform CPR or deliver a baby without the proper training. For the love of all that is good and holy, please leave all of that to the professionals.

Financial decisions are some of the most significant and stressful ones we face in our lives. Deciding what to do with a windfall can be a huge challenge. All of a sudden, relatives you’ve never heard of start coming to you with business ideas that need your capital. Although it hasn’t been proven, there is a myth that one-third of lottery winners end up declaring bankruptcy three to five years after their win. If it is true, why might this happen? For starters, they’re most likely not getting financial advice from professionals. When completing your taxes every year, you could do them alone, or you could get a chartered accountant to file them for you. With the UK’s financial rules constantly changing, you may be missing out on some deductions. Many accountants claim that you’ll get back the fee you pay them and more from all the tax deductions and credits they’ll find for you. If this is the case, why wouldn’t you take the expert advice?

Increasingly, people are opting to represent themselves in court; unfortunately, many of these cases  result in unfavourable outcomes for the self-represented parties. The legal system is complicated, and there’s no way around it. While lawyers and judges are often perceived as sharks or corrupt (to be fair, some are), many genuinely believe in justice and will do everything in their power to help their clients. No amount of legal dramas or online searches will prepare you to take on a case with the same skill as a seasoned lawyer who can cite cases from memory.

When Personal Choice and Lived Experience Should Prevail

The phrase ‘go with your gut’ has merit. There are times when you’re faced with a decision and you already know what you need to do, but sometimes you choose not to. Your gut decision is, more often than not, the right one for you.

Some choices are extremely personal, such as creating your own music playlists, and these are best made on your own. While getting a playlist curated by a loved one is endearing, there’ll be at least one song on it that isn’t to your taste. Even deciding whether to use Spotify or Apple Music comes down to individual preference.

Buying a family home is one of the most significant decisions a person can ever make. It’s fine to drive around a neighbourhood and look for ‘for sale’ signs, but you need to dig deeper. Speaking to others in the area, including local residents and estate agents, and checking for comparable prices online can help you decide whether the house with the pretty paint job is better for you than the one two blocks from the school.

How you raise children is also a very personal decision. Your well-meaning mother-in-law may have raised five children of her own, but that was two generations ago, and many things have changed. While many Generation X mothers chose to stay home, millennials are enthusiastic about earning money and letting others take care of their children. What works for one family may not work for another, even if they’re related.

The Balance and Decision-Making Framework

There are times when making a decision requires the input of professionals, but then you make the final choice. Insurance, for example, is a broad industry. Using an insurance aggregator that has been compiled by experts can assist you as you shop around. By answering a few standard questions, you’ll be provided with a smaller range of options than if you’d tried it alone. Another example is online gambling; there are so many sites to choose from, and you could spend hours testing each one. If you were to get your UK casino options from experts, however, you would drastically reduce the number of sites to test.

When a choice is complicated but, in the end, it’s your decision alone, it helps to get some input from a variety of people. These can be professionals, peers or online sources. This range of perspectives may help in the decision-making. Sometimes it helps for another person to look at your decision with a fresh set of eyes and highlight anything you may not have considered. You don’t have to take their advice, but it’s helpful to have a range of perspectives.

Making Savvy Choices

In the course of your life, you’ll have to make decisions that range from choosing toothpaste to deciding when to sell your home. While the former is a personal choice and one you can make from experience, the latter would benefit from input by an expert. The key is knowing when to ask for advice from a professional and when to trust your gut. So, when do you put your trust in an expert, and when do you decide on your own? Start with YMYL, and trust experts there; trust yourself everywhere else and don’t be afraid to combine both approaches.
