Typically, artificial muscles excel in one area but fall short in another, limiting their real-world applicability.

Flexible muscles often lack the strength to lift heavy objects, while strong muscles tend to be too stiff for adaptive, soft tasks. This trade-off has constrained the versatility of artificial muscles. However, a team led by Professor Hoon Eui has developed a novel muscle that weighs just 1.25 grams and addresses this challenge.

The artificial muscle developed by the UNIST team can support up to 11 pounds, a remarkable feat given that this is approximately 4,000 times its own weight. Additionally, the muscle can stretch up to 12 times its original length when in its softened state. Professor Jeong emphasized that this research overcomes the fundamental limitation faced by traditional artificial muscles, which are often either highly stretchable but weak, or strong but stiff.
