Addressing Emerging Threats from China and Russia
The space domain is becoming increasingly contested, with nations like China and Russia developing sophisticated counterspace capabilities. Chinese advancements include the development of "killer satellites" and anti-satellite (ASAT) systems, which can target and disrupt U.S. space assets. The Secure World Foundation has reported that China has launched satellites with jamming capabilities and is working on direct-ascent anti-satellite programs. These developments highlight the urgent need for the U.S. to enhance its space defense capabilities.
Saltzman has expressed concerns about China potentially deploying systems capable of physically damaging satellites by the mid-to-late 2020s. Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force John Bentivegna emphasized the importance of providing Guardians with training that allows them to anticipate and counter adversary capabilities effectively.
