Recently, Ray Kurtweil, a well known expert in Artificial Intelligence and Google’s head of engineering, commented that robots will be smarter than us by 2029. This made us think about where technology is really going and how much we are looking forward to hearing Gary Atkinson talk at the Connected Conference on June 18 in Paris about whether or not technology can save us from ourselves.
Gary is Director of Emerging Technologies from ARM. ARM has shipped more than 20 billion ARM based chips since 1990, and their ARM chip powers about 10 billion consumer devices, roughly 35%, worldwide. But Gary has the cool job at ARM: he spends his time traveling the world looking for new technology that already has or may have a use for ARM-based processors in disruptive, globally scalable and impactful applications. He’s interested in how the mass deployment of low cost and low power sensors can provide the real-time data needed to improve production or energy efficiency, or to automate how one machine talks to another.
At the Connected Conference, Gary is going to talk about how we, as a human race, are putting tremendous pressure on ourselves and our resources as our population continues to grow and strive for an improved way of life. In his keynote, we will get to hear about the challenges that cannot be fixed with a revolutionary breakthrough — growing and raising food, providing clean water, addressing lifestyle-induced healthcare issues. Gary believes we will need lots of “little data” from sensors to help us make better decisions and improve crop yields, detect water leaks and protect those with a chronic disease from an acute episode. The technology is now cheap enough, low power enough and small enough to address these challenges – so what can we do about it?
