BlaBlaCar, formerly CoVoiturage.fr & Comuto,  announced excitedly today that their European ride-sharing surface surpassed a monumental number today – there was a 1 Million+ seat capacity available as of June 18th, 2012. The ride-sharing car has seen explosive growth since 2009, as they outlined in the infographic below – to be exact, 135% annual growth year over year in the past 3 years.
The ride-sharing company has been pretty active in both the collaborative consumption community and the environmental community, winning awards such as the Smart Green Startup award from the ecosummit in Germany earlier this year. The infographic below gives a bit of insight into just how much their contributing on both fronts: raising the average number of persons per vehicle on the road in Europe from 1.8 to 2.7 persons when comparing BlaBlaCar drivers to non-drivers. The service has facilitated over 28 Million in-person meetings between passengers and drivers, who have collectively traveled over 1 1 Billion km together, or 44,000 travels around the circumference around the world.
On a mobile front, BlaBlaCar boasted as well that now, 19% of all bookings are done via mobile. I’ve always been a big fan of BlaBlaCar, namely because I was/am a hitchhiker of sorts, and because I actually discovered the service before I discovered the startup when I first arrived in France.
BlaBaCar has been taking Europe by storm since its latest round of funding earlier this year. The service is available in the UK, France, Spain, and has expanded into Belgium and bought a competitor in Italy this year.
