Google announced an agreement with the Franco-Belgian press, highlighting four initiatives:<a href=\"http:\/\/googlefrance.blogspot.fr\/2012\/12\/un-partenariat-avec-les-editeurs-de.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed:+LactualitDeGoogle+(L&#039;actualit%C3%A9+de+Google)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>They will promote Belgian media through AdWords<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They will increase revenue generated through AdSense &amp; AdExchange<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They will help Press get on Google+ (notably Google+ Hangouts)\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They will push their content more to users via mobile &amp; tablet <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in all,\u00a0it looks like a big freaking win for Google, who staved off press looking for payouts by getting them to use almost every single Google service in exchange for a few services &#8211; I&#8217;ve seen startups argue better deals with Google in the past 3 months.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>Google says there are plenty of &#8220;Win-Win&#8221; outcomes for French &amp; German Press<\/h1>\n<p>Given the similarity to the dispute Google is having with French &amp; German editors, who are calling for royalties payouts for snippets shown on Google News, Google&#8217;s CEO of Belgium, Thierry Geerts, took the opportunity to point out that Google is highly in favor of resolving these issues without lawyers, saying &#8220;there are plenty of win-win outcomes if Google &amp; the press align their efforts in the digital world.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe announcement also cited the 4 billion visits that press sites receive each month, roughly 100,000 per minute, and how Google AdWords send $7 Billion to news sites each month.<br \/>\nLastly, the blog post highlighted two different studies(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trg.de\/en\/company\/newspresse\/leistungsschutzrecht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this one<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ejc.net\/magazine\/article\/google_tax_editors_publishers_backroom_lobbying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that one<\/a>) which concluded that the press should not try to force Google to pay them, but instead should work together with them.<\/p>\n<h1>What&#8217;s this all really mean<\/h1>\n<p>I think there are a few key takeaways from this announcement:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 15px;\">There is NO way that French &amp; German press are getting money out of Google for royalties. It would open flood gates from so many other media companies &#8211; it&#8217;s cheaper to block them and take the loss of traffic, than to set precedent for paying for content on the internet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Google sees itself as an enabler to digital press, and for those who are resisting the inevitable shift towards digital (it&#8217;s already happened, but let&#8217;s pretend for\u00a0those\u00a0in denial that it&#8217;s still happening), Google can be a way to regain the lost revenue from dipping paper sales<\/li>\n<li>Please God, Google, do not see Rude Baguette as a French site!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google\u00a0announced\u00a0yesterday on their French blog the end of a six-year struggle with the francophone Belgian press, who argued that the &#8220;cached&#8221; versions of articles on Google violated the rights of journalists, and that they should pay royalties to said press.
