Based on app store data, users are still using the streaming service even after Rogan backlash and Russia&#8217;s exit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify\u2019s earnings grew <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/rogan-backlash-didnt-hurt-spotifys-140521103.html#:~:text=Now%2C%20Spotify&#039;s%20first%2Dquarter%20earnings,21%25%20to%20reach%20252%20million.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by 15%<\/a> in the first quarter. Despite Russia&#8217;s exit and the loss of 1.5 million Russian users, Spotify\u2019s premium subscribers rose by 15% in the first quarter to reach 182 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ad-supported users also grew by 21% to reach 252 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early 2022, some popular musicians like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2022-01-30\/spotify-joe-rogan-covid-neil-young-list-of-artists?_amp=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pulled their songs from Spotify<\/a> to protest its alliance with Joe Rogan, a controversial podcaster, who used his platform to disseminate COVID-19 misinformation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even amidst that and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondsocialmediashow.com\/delete-spotify-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#deletespotify campaign<\/a> on social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudebaguette.com\/en\/2019\/12\/the-startup-behind-tiktok-trials-new-music-app-taking-aim-at-spotify-and-apple-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Spotify app<\/a> disclosed that its competitors&#8217; streaming apps weren&#8217;t having a boost from its PR headache as its app had continued to get millions of weekly downloads, larger than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, Spotify\u2019s earnings showed that the news headlines concerning Rogan that dominated early 2022 didn\u2019t actually affect its business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify beat on <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/27\/rogan-backlash-didnt-hurt-spotifys-q1-as-paying-subscribers-grew-15-despite-russia-exit\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost all metrics<\/a>, with overall monthly active users of 19% year-over-year to an unprecedented 422 million by March-end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, its gain rose by 24% to reach \u20ac2.66 billion, even above the \u20ac2.61 billion estimates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify revealed that Europe and Latin America contributed to its user growth in the first quarter, which helped to balance Russia&#8217;s exit loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify stock, however, came down on weaker projections of 187 million premium subscribers in the second quarter against the 189.4 million estimate, plus a lower gross margin of 25.2% against the expected 27%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The streaming firm disclosed that it\u2019s anticipating <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/27\/rogan-backlash-didnt-hurt-spotifys-q1-as-paying-subscribers-grew-15-despite-russia-exit\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another loss of 600,000 subscriber<\/a>s following the Russia service closure. Presently, the stock is down at 11%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More so, the streaming company&#8217;s podcast footprint grew in early 2022, from 3.6 million total podcasts in the 4th quarter to 4.0 million currently on the platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise in monthly active users engaged with podcast content equally outnumbered overall monthly active user growth. The podcast listening rates rose in the double-digits year-over-year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Spotify plans to launch \u201cUser Choice Billing\u201d with Google&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another development, Spotify is planning to launch \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2022\/03\/24\/google-spotify-apple-user-choice-billing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">User Choice Billing<\/a>\u201d with Google that would permit Android users to pay via Spotify\u2019s payment system rather than using Google Play Billing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company disclosed the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2022-01-06\/spotify-introduces-call-to-action-cards-for-podcast-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launch of call-to-action cards<\/a>, an interactive ad format to prompt podcast listeners to take some action.
