The fund will focus on backing \u201cmission-driven\u201d projects at the Series A stage, but also has reserves to fund certain \u201cbreakout\u201d companies at Series B and C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atomico has always focused on backing entrepreneurs who are working to address global problems, with innovative solutions for sustainability, healthcare, and education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company says the new fund will work with \u201cambitious European founders, who deliver positive, transformational change across every aspect of society and the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re guided by a simple belief: profit and purpose are mutually reinforcing, not mutually exclusive,\u201d Zennstrom said in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s argued that entrepreneurs, not politicians, are society\u2019s \u201cchangemakers,\u201d given how society and the economy are shaped by innovation and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atomico also believes that the time is right for big investments into Europe\u2019s startup scene. Investment partner Siraj Khaliq pointed to an emerging &#8220;renaissance&#8221; in the European tech sector, noting the past decade\u2019s rising number of \u201cunicorns,\u201d private tech firms valued at $1 billion. In 2014, there were just 22 across the continent, while today there are over 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Now the talent exists here, the mentorship exists here. All these key ingredients you need for European success stories actually exist,&#8221; Khaliq told CNBC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khaliq says Atomico\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-tech-investment-atomico\/venture-capital-firm-atomico-backs-european-tech-with-820-million-fund-idUSKBN20C0HB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provides not only funding<\/a>, but also advice and expertise. The firm helped him co-found a weather modeling startup working to optimize crop yields for farmers, before he joined the VC firm.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I really liked the Atomico model, which is not necessarily just finance people but people who have built businesses themselves.
