Siggraph stands for &#8220;special interest group on graphics and interactive techniques&#8221; and the event is the professional equivalent to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cesweb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consumer Electronics Show<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.e3expo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>What&#8217;s at Siggraph?<\/h1>\n<p>The conference and exhibition are expected to draw more than 20,000 professionals from all over the world. They will be showing the industry&#8217;s most respected technical and creative programs focusing on research, science, art, animation, music, gaming, interactivity, education, and the web. The event includes a three-day exhibition of products and services from the computer graphics and interactive marketplace.<br \/>\nSiggraph is such a massive event that it even has a dedicated iPad app, the &#8220;online scheduler&#8221;\u2026 Here is a taste of the sort of things you can expect to see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>computer vision algorithms, used for everything augmented reality<\/li>\n<li>visual effects (VFX) for cinema<\/li>\n<li>image stabilisation algorithms (remember the iMovie 09 feature?)<\/li>\n<li>animation techniques<\/li>\n<li>3D modeling from images and video-based reconstruction of urban environments<\/li>\n<li>gigapixel imaging and super high definition videos<\/li>\n<li>3D on the web<\/li>\n<li>panoramic imaging and virtual tours<\/li>\n<li>GPU-based image processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and here&#8217;s a preview of the technical papers this year:<br \/>\n<iframe title=\"SIGGRAPH 2012 : Technical Papers Preview Trailer\" width=\"801\" height=\"451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cKrng7ztpog?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nLast year, a Cap Digital-labelled startup met around 400 people at their booth. This gave them great publicity and contacts, which translated into actual contracts signed a few months later. Without Cap Digital and the ARD, they wouldn&#8217;t have had the chance to exhibit at Siggraph (which costs thousands of euros).<\/p>\n<h1>Who&#8217;s going?<\/h1>\n<p>Our 6 lucky startups will be exhibiting with the likes of Dreamworks, Canon, Intel, but also alongside smaller and as (more?) innovative companies. Hopefully they&#8217;ll be making new friends and they&#8217;ll learn more about the latest research and technology in their industries. If you&#8217;re around and want to pay them a visit, they will be at booth number <a href=\"http:\/\/s2012.siggraph.org\/sites\/default\/files\/SIGGRAPH%20Exhibits%2006-13-12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">745<\/a>, just opposite nVidia and Pixar. Here&#8217;s who they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laster.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laster technologies<\/a> creates augmented reality glasses (kind of like Google glasses?), and commercialises them in the defense industry.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayotle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayotle<\/a> provides computer vision software and technical services based on motion capture for interactive applications to the media and entertainment industry (check out the facetracker).<\/li>\n<li>Mercenaries Engineering develops <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guerillarender.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guerilla Render<\/a>, a state of the art production rendering software for the animation and the VFX industries.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mikrosimage.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mikros Images<\/a> will be showing their latest production, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mikrosimage.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Rising.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rising<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neomisanimation.com\/en\/neomis\/neomis-presentation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neomis Animation<\/a> is an animation studio founded by two former Disney Feature Animation Studios employees, who also do R&amp;D work on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neomisanimation.com\/en\/section\/r-and-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hair animation<\/a>\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.solidanim.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solidanim<\/a> is a company specialising in 3D animation for visual effects and video games, who also creates novel motion capture devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the way, did you know that France is the 3rd leader in animation and visual effects, behind the US and Japan?<\/p>\n<h1>About Cap Digital and ARD<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.capdigital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cap Digital<\/a>\u00a0is a non-profit\u00a0business cluster for digital content and services in Greater Paris.
