The extra &#8220;s&#8221; means it is secure and from tomorrow onwards will mean an awful lot to web users.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"2puo8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2puo8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2puo8-0-0\">An SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer) is a way to establish an encrypted connection. Encrypted meaning secure and it is vital for online shopping. Would you send in your credit card numbers via an unsafe website?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"e3776-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"e3776-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"e3776-0-0\">SSL certificates are temporary and need to <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"e3776-1-0\">be renewed<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"e3776-2-0\">. They <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"e3776-3-0\">are issued by<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"e3776-4-0\"> various certificate providers. Some of which have proved, in the past, to be less reliable than others. One of them, in particular, is Symantec and its subsidiaries.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"7q8q9-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7q8q9-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7q8q9-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"707dn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"707dn-0-0\">From padlock to a warning sign<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"7nq92-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7nq92-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7nq92-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"cdta6-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cdta6-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cdta6-0-0\">Depending on the web browser, you&#8217;ve already come across le padlock symbol. Sometimes open (unsafe) or close (safe), sometimes green (safe) or red (unsafe).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"6dul6-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6dul6-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6dul6-0-0\">With Google&#8217;s update of its star browser Chrome, last summer, warnings were not that subtle anymore<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6dul6-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6dul6-2-0\">An ungracious &#8220;not secure&#8221; sign before the URL makes sure you think twice before entering the website if you noticed it<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6dul6-3-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"1iee7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1iee7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1iee7-0-0\">After the October update, a massive warning sign will make you run away with a scream. It&#8217;s always possible to go past it but hardly recommended.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"74plb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"74plb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"74plb-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5a889-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5a889-0-0\">What is wrong with Symantec SSL certificates?<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"baqj3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"baqj3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"baqj3-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-0-0\">Through various mishaps in the past, Symantec lost the trust of Google. It started back in 2015 with a batch of bad test certificates. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-1-0\">Symantec reiterated the following year and &#8220;issued 33 bad certificates&#8221; when Google counted 30,000<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-2-0\">. From then on, Symantec certificates <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-3-0\">were hunted<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-4-0\"> down by Google. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-5-0\">Tomorrow comes the final nail in the Symantec coffin and the websites hosting certificates from Equifax, GeoTrust, RapidSSL, Thawte, and VeriSign dating back to 2016<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8gvmp-6-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"2r74r-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2r74r-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2r74r-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"37s7v-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"37s7v-0-0\">Brutal yet not unexpected<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"bh82f-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"bh82f-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"bh82f-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"5k7v8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5k7v8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5k7v8-0-0\">The method is brutal but not unexpected. The announcement setting the deadline this month dates back to a year ago. A year to comply and adopt another SSL certificate. Yet, about a thousand of the top million websites don&#8217;t comply. And many more that didn&#8217;t make it in the top million.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"e93au\" data-offset-key=\"fpo1j-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fpo1j-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fpo1j-0-0\">Mozilla, the Firefox editor, will proceed the same way but has decided to give a little more time to users. Google will not. What about your website?
