Today, the current mobility industry is fragmented<\/span> and siloed. Travellers are using different booking and payment systems across varied modes of transport. A root cause of this is that the value in transport is held<\/span> in many hands. <\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
There is little interoperability<\/strong> between modes of transport. Nor is there across borders or between competing transport service providers. <\/span>None <\/span><\/span>are incentivised<\/span><\/span> to act <\/span><\/span>collectively<\/span><\/span> for the consumer of transport services, you and I<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A new transport revolution<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Once, there was a revolutionary move from horses to the internal combustion engine. Now, technological advances are yet again set to transform transport beyond recognition<\/strong>. <\/span>New flexible and sharing-economy services (in which individuals can borrow or rent assets owned by someone else) are already reducing the differences between private and public transportation<\/strong><\/span><\/span>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and electric-battery technology will reduce the production costs and running costs of vehicles<\/span><\/span>. It will also make them more accessible to young people and those who cannot drive.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Merging into one market<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As whole industries begin to converge into the same market, new supply chains and business models are emerging<\/strong><\/span><\/span>.<\/strong> Venture Capital money is being raised<\/strong>, such as the $1bn raised to date by Ofo bike-sharing company<\/strong>. <\/span>It is subsidising areas of our transport system that would <\/span><\/span>typically<\/span><\/span> be funded by<\/span><\/span> local government<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Furthermore, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)<\/strong> is on the way. <\/span>This new European data protection regulations will ensure new consumer rights around data portability<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

They tighten how personal data <\/span>is stored<\/span><\/span> and used. Increased penalties associated with the abuse of this data act as a deterrent. GDPR makes transport authorities and service providers wary of interoperability.<\/strong> Although it is a step forward for the protection of personal data.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The ideal trip<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The transport consumer of tomorrow should have the ability to travel <\/strong><\/span><\/span>seamlessly<\/span> from origin to destination<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>He should have the convenience of transport mode choice<\/strong>, travel \u201con-demand\u201d as and when they choose to<\/span><\/span>. <\/span> He should be able to make one single payment for multi-mode travel<\/strong> and have full control of their personal and travel data<\/span><\/span>. And, he should <\/span>be rewarded<\/span><\/span> for his sustainable travel choices. Customers <\/span>simply<\/span><\/span> want to say \u201cI am here and would like to go there\u201d<\/em>. It is as simple and complex as that.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Internet of Mobility<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

New Blockchain technology holds some promise<\/strong>. Combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), it can create a new \u201cInternet of Mobility<\/strong>\u201d. This could tackle some of these issues and challenges for transportation. Imagine smart contracts that could replace the need for third party aggregation platforms. <\/span>These could work with decentralised \u201cmobility accounts\u201d,<\/strong> that would <\/span><\/span>be controlled by<\/span><\/span> the individual<\/span><\/span>. In the future they could <\/span>be attached<\/span><\/span> to a vehicle and controlled by an AI. <\/span>This brings an interesting question: \u201cwho will own cars in the future?\u201d<\/em>, when they can drive themselves<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In such a future, we could expect more integration between competing transport providers<\/strong>. Including the likes of Uber, Didi, Ofo, Mobike et al . <\/span>This would not only be good for the customer, but also reduce unwanted congestion of roadspace and pavement space<\/span><\/span>. High levels of \u201con-road\u201d competition arise from this situation. But it could <\/strong><\/span>be moved<\/span> into the virtual, decentralised world of the blockchain.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The system of systems<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

A couple of transport industry-led projects are emerging, out of Europe (TravelSpirit Foundation<\/a>)<\/strong> and the United States (World Economic Forum)<\/strong><\/span><\/span>. They have identified the need for an integrated and seamless system for transport. TravelSpirit Foundation is approaching this with blockchain<\/strong> in mind. <\/span> The World Economic Forum have preferred to remain <\/span><\/span>conspicuously<\/span><\/span> silent on the potential of blockchain<\/span><\/span>. They prefer to describe the need for a <\/span>\u201csystem of systems\u201d<\/em><\/strong>. <\/span>It will be interesting to watch this emerging space, and see if blockchain can unlock some of inherent problems associated with our fragmented transport system<\/strong><\/span><\/span>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
