Earlier this month, French\u00a0publication <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lejdd.fr\/Societe\/Sante\/Coeur-artificiel-Carmat-le-deuxieme-greffe-se-confie-au-JDD-726328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JDD reported<\/a> that Carmat performed another artificial heart transplant (<a title=\"Carmat has transplanted its artificial heart into a second patient\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rudebaguette.com\/2014\/09\/08\/carmat-confirms-2nd-successful-transplant-artificial-heart-france\/\">which we reported back in\u00a0September<\/a>) &#8211; the big news is that, after 8\u00a0months, the patient is still alive.<br \/>\nThe second patient, whose identity has remained anonymous, reported that life with the Carmat was easy &#8211; &#8220;You forget you have [an artificial heart].&#8221; The battery-operated device allows him to do everything he would like, and given that requirements to undergo the experimental procedure include, again, a terminal prognosis (less than a month to live), you could say this is a miracle. Except that it&#8217;s not. It&#8217;s science.<br \/>\nI got to sit down with\u00a0Carmat Director General\u00a0Marcello\u00a0Conviti at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lafrenchtouchconference.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LFTC<\/a>\u00a0to talk about the problems the company faced (beyond R&amp;D) &#8211;\u00a0a lack of qualified heart-transplant surgeons to perform the operation,\u00a0once the product is approved for use, is a serious issue.\u00a0In fact, because there are only a certain number of organic hearts made available by donors each year,\u00a0the market can only support so many heart surgeons &#8211; Carmat, of course, hopes to produce millions of these hearts per year in order to satisfy the\u00a0growing number of patients likely to\u00a0die\u00a0while waiting on the heart transplant recipient list.<br \/>\nForget Kong.
