Even my grandmother grasped this notion.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\">Paylib, unfortunately for them, did not heed my grandmother&#8217;s advice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/markbivens.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/paylib.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2166\" alt=\"paylib\" src=\"http:\/\/markbivens.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/paylib.jpg\" width=\"769\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">France&#8217;s attempt to create a Paypal-killer, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paylib.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paylib<\/a> payment solution created by a consortium of three of France&#8217;s largest banks &#8212; BNP Paribas, Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, and the Banque Postale &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemondeinformatique.fr\/actualites\/lire-avec-paylib-3-banques-francaises-veulent-contrer-paypal-55062.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched with great fanfare<\/a> about 6 months ago.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The global payments sector represents hundreds of billions of dollars in products and services. It&#8217;s no surprise that practically every segment of the value chain is rife with companies gunning for a piece of the action.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The irony of the rapid success of Paypal is that many banks possessed all the ingredients to release a similar service at the time but lacked the vision, agility, and political capital to make it work. It&#8217;s a classic lesson in the innovation dilemma faced by incumbents.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">..<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the banks were still dawdling aimlessly, the dawn of the smartphone revolution arrived. This led to the emergence of a new crop of innovators working on the next generation of payment services. Jack Dorsey&#8217;s Square became one of the darlings in the U.S., while in Europe <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2012\/12\/19\/sumup-another-european-square-expands-to-3-more-markets-france-belgium-portugal-now-taking-payments-in-10-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a slew of immitators followed suit<\/a>.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Albeit somewhat late to the party but with the backing of the aforementioned French banking giants, Paylib announced itself with much pomp and circumstance in late 2013. Today, the service <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/entreprises-secteurs\/finance-marches\/actu\/0203448077499-paylib-veut-etoffer-son-bouquet-de-services-665356.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claims<\/a> to have 200,000 registered users and 400 e-commerce retailers.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Setting aside the debate of whether a group of incumbents can successfully compete in a crowded race to innovation, or successfully transcend France&#8217;s borders, there is one major oversight that made me burst out laughing at the Paylib announcement: the venture registered the Paylib.fr domain name, but not Paylib.com.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\">My very first reflex when I heard the Paylib.fr announcement was to check the Paylib.com domain record. The dot-com was also registered. Smart move by Paylib, I thought. But when I checked the Whois record, I noticed that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Paylib.com is owned by a guy in Russia<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/markbivens.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/paylib_whois.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2165\" alt=\"paylib_whois\" src=\"http:\/\/markbivens.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/paylib_whois-300x281.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;\">I couldn&#8217;t believe it. How could these French banks, which are global institutions, in their haste to produce their own Paypal killer, not think to acquire the <em>Paylib.com<\/em> domain name before the announcement?
