[Interview] Kubity Cofounder and CEO Romain Gora discusses their plan to make communication via 3D ubiquitous

Throughout the July / August vacation period, the Rude Baguette will be running a series of interviews with some of France’s top and rising startups, where their founders give us more insight into their business, their future plans and what sets them apart from the rest. In this installment, we talk with Romain Gora, CEO and Cofounder of Kubity, who debuted their innovative and seamless approach to transforming designs into interactive 3D experiences at our recent Paris Founders Event.

 

romainYou debuted Kubity for the first time publicly at the most recent edition of our Paris Founders Event. For those who were unable to attend, tell us a bit about Kubity – describe what Kubity is and why you decided to develop it.

Kubity transforms any static, inert 3D model into an interactive and immersive experience to the browser that can be easily shared on the web and mobile. There was nothing in the market that provided a fast and seamless solution to do this.

You spoke at the event about a world were everyone could communicate in 3D. What did you mean by that? What is your vision for where 3D technology will go?

3D is the best way to describe reality and creativity. People need a way to express themselves in this language and we are bringing them a solution. We believe 3D is a language. Communicating in 3D should be as easy as printing a document or sending an email.

How would you define success for Kubity? How big do you think it can be?

Right now, Kubity has a potential market reach of 100+ million users. There is a growing trend of people using 3D software. Nowadays, even children have 3D creation tools such as SketchUp as part of their K-12 program. There are 2 billion smartphones and tablets being used in the world. Kubity will give their users the unique experience to share and explore 3D content.

What are some sectors you think Kubity could disrupt and why?

Kubity will revolutionize all sectors where 3D is used to communicate: architecture, interior design, woodworking, education, engineering and construction.

You mentioned last at the Paris Founders Event that Kubity took 18 months to get to the public beta. What has been the biggest challenge for you in developing Kubity?

One of our biggest challenges was to switch to the Google Cloud platform to scale to millions of users. We needed to support any 3D model on mobile devices and we didn’t want our users to deal with technical issues, so another major challenge we encountered was the automatic optimization of geometry and textures. We figured it out!

What are the next big steps for you as a company?

We are working in a very fast paced Industry. If we don’t accelerate we will get run over. In the next months, Kubity is releasing its mobile app for iPhone/iPad/Android, with a singular Augmented Reality feature.

We will also support Autodesk suite and especially Revit, the leading BIM software. Another big step for us will be giving away to the users the ability to share their 3D models in Virtual Reality, supporting headsets such as the Oculus Rift.

Kubity’s goal is to revolutionize the way people communicate by offering a platform where users can share their 3D experiences. It’s fast, easy and free.
