After pivoting from DotCloud, app development platform Docker raises $15 M

San Francisco startup Docker announced that it has closed a $15 Million round of funding led by Greylock Partners, with participation by Insight Venture Partners and their existing investors: Benchmark (Peter Fenton), Trinity Ventures (Dan Scholnick), and Jerry Yang/AME Cloud Ventures. The funding will allow the startup, which pivoted from DotCloud back in October, to continue to grow its open-source platform for flexible app development in the cloud,

Docker has become fairly popular with Rackspace customer – Rackspace’s OpenStack fits well with Docker, and poses a viable alternative to Amazon Web Services for developers. To date, Docker has been downloaded 400,000 times,  “welcomed more than 300 contributors, and gathered over 5,000 published “Dockerized” applications in its public index,” from clients like eBay, Yandex, Cloudflare, Mailgun and Baidu, according to their announcement.

Docker was recently named one of our 10 startups we bet you didn’t know what founded by French entrepreneurs – co-founder Solomon Hykes has also been heavily involved, along with Marketing Director Julien Barbier, in While42, a private network of French engineers around the world, with local chapters in several cities including Paris, San Francisco & Miami.
